What To Do Immediately When A Pet Passes On

Losing a pet is a difficult situation to go through, and it is much like losing a human loved one. However, there are some steps that pet owners need to take to ensure that the process of loss is smooth and peaceful, that are unlike human deaths.

Firstly, check to confirm that the pet has really passed on. Sometimes it may not be the case that the pet has passed away yet. For instance, the pet may have shallow breathing or is just not moving very much. However, this may be an indicator that the pet is about to pass on.

If your pet has really passed on, this means that natural bodily processes will soon kick in. First, take a towel or a newspaper to place on the pet's hind especially if they have passed away on the floor or on furniture. This is because as the pet passes away, their body ceases functioning, and this may cause excretion of urine or faeces.

Furthermore, if your pet had passed on in an awkward position (e.g hind legs sticking out), it would be best practice to immediately reposition them to a position that is best for transportation. This should be done before rigor mortis occurs - meaning their body would stiffen naturally in 2-3 hours time.

If you intend to keep the pet in the house for a few days, place the remains in a container and in cold storage. However, the process is straight forward as Singapore prohibits pet burial by law, and only cremation is allowed and immediate arrangements can be made with us.
