Should I Get Another Pet?
If you already own a pet, chances are that the thought of getting another pet has crossed your mind before. Perhaps you are looking to adopt a new furry friend to accompany your pet, or your pet has recently passed on and you are wondering if it is wise to get another pet. From us pet lovers and owners, here are some aspects to consider if you should get another pet:
How is your current living environment like?
Before getting a new pet, you can take stock of your current living environment, and evaluate whether there is space for the pet. Even though they are not as big as human beings, pets also need the roaming space to walk around and play freely. Furthermore, getting a new pet may also mean new household items to satisfy the needs of the pet, such as a litter box, fish tank, or playing items like scratch boards. Even if it’s the same animal as your existing pets, some pets do prefer to have their own items, just as how us humans prefer sleeping in our own beds. For instance, cats might prefer having their personal litter box for pooping, so having two cats might mean two separate litter boxes, taking up space in your home.
Are you getting the pet to “replace” a previous one?
Maybe your pet has passed on recently and you are looking to get a new pet to ease the pain. However, we should also consider if we are understating our grief towards losing our pets, and getting a new pet is a quick fix to distract ourselves from negative emotions. On the other hand, don’t get stuck in the mentality that “my pet would never want me to replace them!”. When the feelings of sadness and distress eventually fade away, there will undoubtedly still be a feeling of emptiness that only the unconditional love of a furry friend can fill.
Do you have the resources to welcome another pet in your home?
Integrating another pet at home is not as easy as simply bringing it home. It takes energy and time to care for them, ensuring that they are comfortable in a new living environment, and most importantly, to form a bond with your existing pet. Your existing pet also needs to adjust to the addition and as a pet owner, we should help to ensure a smooth transition. In addition to time and energy, having another pet also involves additional monetary cost as there would be an additional uptake of trips to the vet, pet food, or even play items!
The prospect of having another pet is indeed an exciting one. However, it is wise to take a step back and consider the pros and cons of having an additional pet. In the end, the pet is not just a furry friend that satisfies our needs, but we also to need to exercise care and love towards them and give them the most optimal living conditions and environment.
